Little Dresses by Anna Vickery

Strawberry Tulle Party Dress
We can't believe what a difference it makes having Anna's little dresses on little people. It's really great to see the dresses being worn in the way we'd imagined, actually being played and ran around in.

Becky of My Fabulous Life recently asked to borrow some dresses for a shoot she was styling at Muddifords Court in Devon. (Yes I know I go on about Muddifiords but it really is a stunning place to stay that deserves a mention every time)
It's lovely to see so much detail go into the styling and the use of these surroundings in the photography. Anna and I were very pleased with images that came back, so cute!

Anna has been working on the childrenswear for a while now, slowly developing patterns and styles in her spare time. I am very happy to announce that these super cute designs are all available in the shop, some can be made to order and others are one of a kind. Keep an eye out for new dresses coming up all the time.
Anna also takes on custom orders for flower girls and also teaches a 'make a little girls dress' workshop at Millie Moon in Wells and Frome.  For more information contact Anna here.

Refresher Dresses

Earlier this year we were asked to design and make some dresses all in soft pastel refresher colours. This couldn't have been more perfect for the Summer season, sherbet lemons, mints and candy pinks were bang on trend.

The dresses and the wedding had a definite late Fifties vibe and we took inspiration from some advertising and fashion shots of this era. The full skirts with built in nets were a must and the maids chose to go for the cross over neckline that worked well on each of them.
The colours were surprisingly difficult to find when considering they make silk in every colour imaginable. After many swatches of yellow in particular we found the right shade in a local shop that matched a sherbet lemon.

Each dress had a grosgrain ribbon bow tied at the waist in a different colour.

Jemma (the bride) then asked if we could possibly make silk ties in matching colours for the ushers, as you may be able to tell, I LOVED seeing them all together! We gave each tie a different coloured lining and of course the 'Alexandra King' label was attached.
The colours just look so yummy. Imagine with some added glitter or studs or Miami Vice styling and how awesome these super sweet colours could be for every day :)

....... And here's a sneak peek of Jemma's wedding day with her bridesmaids. Jemma had a stunning full length gown designed by Sassi Holford, wow factor all round and I was so proud to have our dresses stood next to a Sassi dress!

Friday Friends - Wings Art aka Chris King

So some of you may have noticed a few changes around here on the blog? This brilliant splattering of glitter and objects is down to Wing aka Chris King of Wingsart.net who has given us a make-over.

This man is not only an excellent graphic designer he's also super talented with a blue pencil and a pot of black ink as an illustrator. His use of colour is always eye poppingly gorgeous, pinks and greens is a winner with me.
These talents may also be one of the reasons why he's the man I chose to marry. Kind of handy don't you think?

So what exactly does Wing do?

He makes type and graphics look beautifully spaced and incredibly stylish. This is more complicated than you think and nearly impossible to work out, but those white spaces in between the text are very important.

Wing designs logos and branding that always hits the mark and will certainly get you recognised, I've included some of my favourites below. He designed my bow which will last forever as our icon, it perfectly communicates our style. Kind of what a logo is supposed to do.

He sketches, inks and colours fabulous posters, he did our wedding invitation (above) which was a big fold out poster for each of our guests. I'm always blown away when I see the sketches and the inked versions, it's usually hidden away so I don't comment, he never thinks they are good enough!  It's rare seeing someone who can really draw in a proper way nowadays and is so fascinating to look at.

Wing's also a big knowledge on illustration history and weekly art book reviews on his blog. He never says anything bad, the bad ones aren't worth mentioning. I'm so jealous of his book collection and it will make you want to add to your big time. I love the way he photographs the pages so you actually see the size and what the book looks like before buying.

He does lots of other things too, designing graphics for the Kiddimoto balance bikes and helmets, commercial stuff making businesses look intelligent, album covers and zombie t-shirts, the list goes on. Basically making pages look beautiful in a very cool way.

On the rare occasion he may also give some excellent advice on your dress being made in the studio, his opinion is always appreciated and acted upon. If your dress has a waist detail that really flatters, or an ultra feminine silhouette thank him for his inspiration.

You may like to look at his blog, it has beautiful type, exciting visuals and he's not a bad writer either. You'll definitely learn something and if you like 80s B movies you'll love it.

Here is more of his wonderful work, I know this is a little biased but I love our new designed blog!
Thanks Wing xxx

Wing does a comic book movie every week for Illustration Friday and usually with a theme. These ones are my favourites, can you guess which films they are from?

This shoot was way back in March at a super sophisticated wedding fair ran by the Marry Me Somerset ladies Abi and Lisa. They wore a couple of our dresses all day looking fabulous and the brilliantly enthusiastic Oscar and Rose photography did a mini shoot at the Mansion house in Clifton.

You must have a peek at the Oscar and Rose blog as the images are just stunning. The lovely lady has a railway carriage as a studio set in the Wiltshire countryside and I am amazed to how she captures the most incredible shots of people, babies and even pets that hold so much personality. I usually hate baby pictures but these even bought a little smile to my face :)

The dresses Abi and Lisa are wearing will be coming up soon in the shop, ready in time for party planning!

Here is the sketch of our gyspy luxe ruffled silk dress made for a styled shoot in Devon at Muddifords. I have just seen a sneak peek of the images by My Fabulous Life and they are stunning!

Shimmering Silver and Poppin' Purple Wedding Dress

I love, love, love receiving surprise photos in my in box from customers sharing their wedding snaps. When customers simply order from the online shop I don't know all the ins and outs of their wedding, we haven't spent hours discussing the wedding, the colours, the styling etc here at the studio and I have no idea what they look like.

So these are always the best surprises when I get the photos. This is the lovely Michelle and new husband Devender from Charleston in the US of A in her silver Sarah Jane dress and violet underskirts. The colour combo works so well with this silver that always picks up the shade next to it and sets the tone of the dress. It's quite magical.

I love that Michelle wore the Vivienne Westwood Lady Dragon's and that fabulous floral cascading necklace that matches with her gorgeous tattoos.

This dress is one that I always wonder how it will be worn, it's designed to be off the shoulders but some people like them fixed in place and others off the shoulder, others on. With lots of boning in the bodice for support the straps are allowed to seductively fall off the shoulder every now and again teetering just on the tips and showing off that wonderful neckline. It's definitely my favourite neckline shape and Michelle wears it brilliantly.

Congratulations to Michelle and Devender! xxx
