Bespoke Bride Kelly by Anna Vickery

Here is another of Anna's spectacular bespoke wedding dresses, this time for beautiful bride Kelly who was married in the first weekend in September.

Anna met Kelly through teaching dressmaking workshops at Millie Moon in Frome and to cut a long story short came to the rescue when Kelly was let down on her first wedding dress order.

This worked out wonderfully as Kelly was now able to have the exact dress of her dreams, a stunning 1950's inspired couture gown.
The design included a fine French corded lace bodice with elbow length sleeves that fitted over the smooth sweetheart bodice trimmed with covered buttons down the back.  A sharp pleated silk belt cinched the waist and the dress finished in a glorious full circle skirt made of handwoven silk.

In Kelly's words " Thank you very much for making my beautiful wedding dress. Michael and all the guests really loved it. I was so pleated with the outcome.
With many thanks and love from Kelly "

Fabulous Wedding Belles ....

Photography by My Fabulous Life

Photography by My Fabulous Life

A while back in the Summer Anna sent her gorgeous flower girls dress down to Devon for a shoot with photographer Becky Joiner of My Fabulous Life.
Becky gathered flowers and girls and some super sparkly accessories from Crown and Glory to create a fun and brightly coloured collection of photographs.

My favorite image is of Anna's strawberry dress which looks wonderfully bright surrounded by all those beautiful flowers.

This image made it into Wed Magazine too which I have to say is one of the best wedding magazines I've seen. It's big, heavy, printed on gorgeous paper, is reasonably priced and has loads of interesting articles along with details of all the great suppliers in the South West.

A huge thank you to My Fabulous Life and Wed Magazine.

Customer Photos - Alex in Orange

Anna has been working away on some stunning wedding dresses this Summer and this is the first of her brides this year. I love the floaty chiffon in this warm burnt orange.

Over to Anna ..................

Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of designing and making another wedding dress for a friend. People always ask is it more stressful and is there more pressure than working with someone you don’t know, and the answer is, without doubt, yes! But it is also totally rewarding to be there on their special day, be privy to all the secrets in the run up and see your cumulative work together recorded in their photos. (The compliments you - hopefully - receive on the day aren’t a bad boost either!)
I went to secondary school and college with Alex and who would have thought on all those nights out and trips away, by that I mean Newquay age 17, club nights and festivals in the late 90‘s, that one day we would be working on the design for her wedding dress together. Alex joked with me a couple of years ago that when her and Pete got married she would like me to make her dress, so that was that…..

From the start I knew Alex did not want a ‘white’ wedding dress, I remember saying to Alexandra I thought she would go for red, so I wasn’t far off when she fell in love with a vibrant shade of handwoven silk dupion called ‘Firefly.’ We worked on the design and decided to combine this with a slightly darker shade of silk crinkle chiffon to create a long flowing skirt AND THEN all I had to do was keep quiet about the colour for about 6 months!!

Alex and Pete’s wedding was full of surprises - the bridesmaids wore green dresses and Pete and his best men green waistcoats as his surname is Green, I also worked green beads into Alex’s corsages on her dress and hair piece as she was becoming a Green. There was enough fabric left from Alex’s dress for me to make a little orange flower girl dress for Alex’s niece Astrid and Alex’s Mum (one of the few other people that knew about the orange dress) organised their surprise wedding transport, a green and orange camper (swoon) from www.vwsplitscreenhire.co.uk.
The wedding was held at Wells town hall, the atmosphere was great on a sunny Saturday with market in full swing outside and lots of people about. The reception at Batcombe barn, which is a little remote to be polite but very lovely and rustic (thankfully it was dry) had a Thai theme as they have spent a lot of time in Thailand together. When we arrived our old music teacher played sax and we ate yummy spicy barbequed canapés and later the wedding food, for all 200 people, was pad thai, sticky rice and thai green curry. Everyone ate, drank and was merry, and then probably drank some more as most people were camping the night, and later on Alex took to the stage and sang with her band. It was such a fun day, with brilliant details and homemade touches, just right for Alex and Pete.

Here’s what Alex wrote in a lovely thank you:
‘I can’t thank you enough for such a perfect dress, it was exactly how I imagined and the dress of my dreams! It definitely needs some dry cleaning! Then maybe at some point I will call on you to take it up so I can wear it again but i’m not ready to change it yet, still enjoying looking at it.’

Anna Vickery Bridesmaids and Flower Girl Collection 2013

It was inspired by: A lovely lady we made a dress for back along telling us about her little dotty tulle flower girl dress from her wedding in the 80’s - The dress was so beautiful she couldn’t part with it, and it has lived in a wardrobe at her house ever since. The dress has been tried on by her girls as they grew up and still gets bought out every now and again just to be admired - it even had a trip over to our studio. I thought how lovely it was to treasure a special heirloom piece in this way, quite sentimental for me, I can’t say I felt the same about my straight peach satin 1980’s bridesmaids frock (sorry!)

The Mood Board Featured: Little girls doing things in dresses - climbing, swinging, playing, running around - although these are to be dresses to be kept they are to have fun in first.

The fabrics used: The softest tulle we can find, tulle is used in lots of our grown up dresses and it’s surprising how many different qualities you can get and how they behave/feel. 100% cotton for linings, silk organza and chiffon and an off cut of fine corded lace - don’t worry we can still get more.

The silhouettes: It’s all about the full twirly skirts with fairly simple bodices. I also really wanted to include a t-shirt style bodice for older girls as we find this is a popular choice for 7 years and over. The girls Cape is also an off-shoot from an Alexandra King adults style.

The colours: On this collection I wanted to keep colours quite neutral, so people could focus on the dress shapes. Having said this I can’t resist a flash of colour in a ribbon belt, but it is great to be able to change these so easily and make feature colours ‘pop’ against the lighter backgrounds - I always get carried away buying ribbon for belts/trims. If anyone is interested we can get most of the fabrics used in lots of different colours too, feel free to get in touch with requests.

Details: Polka dots, both in the tulle and cotton on the Faye dress and ribbon trims on the others (Well who doesn’t like a good polka dot?) Liberty print bias binding on the Elise dress, I couldn’t resist it and it shows how a small amount of print can be used as a detail in this way. Vintage lace trim, it’s always nice to use one off bits and pieces on what after all are pretty unique dresses.

They are made for: Although the dresses are advertised as for bridesmaids and flower girls they will be lovely for any occasion, think party’s and christenings, they will definitely get lots of wear before they are put away to keep.

Influences during the design process: As I was designing and making the collection I had the girls which were to be models on our photo shoot in mind, all children of friends, and couldn’t help but think of things like their hair colour and character. Disaster nearly struck on the day before the shoot when 2 out of 4 of our models were poorly with a sickness bug, but luckily enough a neighbour of the photo shoot venue (a fantastic country homestead with recently renovated kitchen extension owned by a friends parents) came to the rescue and had 2 little girls of the right age - so the Elise dress was to be the Maggie and the Faye was to be the Lila, but never mind there will be other photo shoots and dresses….

Working on the collection, the fun and difficulties: Even working on little dresses the volume of tulle required can be quite overwhelming! I cut it out in my old home studio (aka spare room) on the floor and struggled to cut it straight, how I love my new cutting table and wish I had it sooner. The shoot was the weekend after I moved house and the way the images turned out so fresh and clean looking seems like a reflection of this, to me anyway. It was a fun morning seeing the dresses look gorgeous on the models and was great to see how comfortable they were in them.

My favourite piece: It’s too hard to pick, I’m really pleased with them all - I love the way the organza skirt on the Elise stands away from the under layer and is so sheer and light and the fullness of the plain tulle on the Elsa, I think this would work well in virtually any colour. I also enjoyed being able to make matching accessories for the dresses as finding matching things can sometimes be tricky and I like to be able to offer this option as part of a handmade package.

The Collection is Available: The collection is available online through the Alexandra King website and Etsy. I also undertake custom orders please contact anna@alexandra-king.com. Every dress is designed and manufactured in Somerset, UK.

Flower Girl Dresses and Pretty Hair Pieces ...

Introducing a Anna Vickery's super gorgeous childrenswear shot by the fabulous Sally Thurrell Photography and styled by our favourite lady Katy Howieson of What Katy Did Next.

Anna designed these flower girl dresses with the shoot in mind, the lilac dotty dress is the perfect vintage 60s style I imagine toddlers look best in, especially with those little sequin shoes and blonde curls.

The mint/teal chiffon flower dress has a silk bodice with ruffle trim and the ivory corded lace and chiffon flower girl dress makes a very pretty dress for all ages. The tulle capelets are the perfect dress up  trimmed in velvet and all are just wonderful for girls to twirl, run and dance about in!

Anna loves working on bespoke designs for weddings and each of the dresses can be made in different sizes and in a colour of your choice to match your wedding theme. For any questions contact Anna here.

Katy teamed Anna's super cute and gorgeous dresses with her hand beaded sashes and stunning hair accessories. I love the star  and the big bow so much! You can take a peek at them all in her shop here.
My latest glitter bodice and mint silk skirt were on show and I designed a 'mini me' version with a sequinned t shirt and tulle sequined skirt, just the outfit I dreamt of as a little girl. These two models were Niece and Aunty which is a great way of getting perfect relaxed photos!

Anna's will be opening her own online shop very soon but in the meantime you can order the beautiful flower girl / party dresses from our combined Etsy shop here.

Polly, Anna and a Wow Factor Dress

Copyright to Latitude Photography

Anna has had the most fabulous Summer of weddings dotted all over Europe and this Summer came something very special for her.  A wedding dress all of her own.

It can be quite daunting working independently on your first wedding dress, it becomes yours as much as the brides. Anna has worked on all of our wedding dresses (she's responsible for them being so beautifully made and constructed) and was more than qualified to go it alone for this job.
Watching Polly's dress unfold at the studio was wonderful to see and the outcome is proper WOW factor all the way. I love Polly's plait on the day too, such a stunningly gorgeous bride!

We will be able to take on a few more wedding dress orders in the future and dependent on your style either myself or Anna or both of us will be working on your dress :)

Over to Anna to tell you all about it .............................

Hi there, Anna here – as you may have gathered it's been a very, very busy year for me when it comes to weddings, both with dressmaking work and socially within my friendship group.

It's always exciting when a friend announces their engagement and hearing about peoples wedding plans – ok, so maybe it's a girl thing – but I do love talking weddings. You can probably guess what the biggest question I'm always itching to ask is.......what about the dress?? It's actually quite difficult to bring this subject up with friends, I would never want to be pushy and am more than aware I can't do them all, but secretly I always hope to be asked to help.

So, back at the end of march this year I was sat in a steam room on my friend Holly's spa hen party, when my friend and neighbour Polly bought up the dress subject :) Polly was getting married this summer and I'm sure she wouldn't mind me saying I had no idea what she would be looking for in a wedding dress. Luckily for me Polly's sister Emma was already on the case and made my job easy.

We all met up a few days later in our local pub – well, why not? - and Alexandra came along too. Polly and Emma had already visited bridal boutiques and Emma had sketched what they envisaged having made based on things Polly liked. We looked at fabric swatches and decided on an elegant fishtail shape with sporty cut away shoulders in a fine corded lace and french crepe, with lots of buttons down the back and extra length to accommodate Polly's VERY high shoes.

The whole making/fitting process went smoothly, we had super relaxed fittings in Polly and Emma's Mums dining room, where the only problem was various people walking through, as the dining room is next to the back door!

Polly and Simon had a small wedding ceremony and meal in Wells and then a big party at our new favourite pub/restaurant The Swan in Wedmore a few weeks after. Two sunny days and two chances to wear the dress, what more could I ask for?

The wedding photographer Polly and Simon used was also a friend of mine, Aran Jefferies of Latitude Photography. You may recognise him from last years blog posts, we made his wife Em's wedding dress too! It's really great to finally be able to share some of his wonderful pictures on our blog and we hope to be able to work with him again soon (there's talk of a children's wear photo shoot, when we all get time....)

For now I'll leave you with some stunning photos – congratulations Polly and Simon.
